Do More With Your Tiller in Jackson, MI

When you think about buying a tiller at Napoleon Lawn and Leisure Inc, you might be thinking of a single-use tool that you use to break up soil before planting a garden. But you can do so much more than that. Depending on your tiller model, you can purchase accessories that make your tiller more versatile.

Aerating

Mowing and fertilizing aren’t the only ways to make your lawn beautiful. Sometimes, the soil needs to be worked to allow air and water to reach roots better. This can help your lawn get the essential nutrients it needs to be healthy.

You should aerate your lawn if the soil becomes compacted through heavy use or if the soil isn’t draining properly. If you do need to aerate, do so while your grass is growing so that it can heal more quickly after aeration.

An aerator kit is available for the FG110 and the FC600.

Edging

The FG110 mini tiller can also be used with a border-edger attachment. Edging your lawn gives it a cleaner look and add value to your property. Edging also provides a barrier so grass doesn’t grow into your flowerbeds or driveway. In fact, some homeowner’s associations require that you edge your lawn.

When you’re ready to edge, walk slowly on your driveway or other surface. Try to keep your arms steady, and take your time to make sure you get the clean look and don’t miss any spots.

Furrowing

After you till your garden, you’ll need to plant the seeds. That means you need to furrow. Of course, you can do that manually with a hoe, but it’s easier if you have a power tool that allows you to furrow quickly and efficiently. Honda’s F220, FC600, and FRC800 all have a furrower attachment available.

Before you begin, decide how far apart you need the furrows. You can find the recommended width between plant rows on your seed packet or the information that comes with plants you purchase. Measure out and mark the furrows. Then, use the furrowing attachment on your tiller to slowly work through the soil in straight lines.

Dethatching

You can also use a dethatcher attachment on the FG110. Thatch is dead organic matter on your lawn. Usually, a little thatch is good for your lawn; it helps hold moisture so you don’t have to water as much. However, if thatch builds up too much, it can keep air and water from getting through to the soil. This causes the same problems as compacted soil – your lawn isn’t healthy if it doesn’t get the nutrients it needs.

If you need to dethatch, try to do it when the grass is actively growing and the soil is moist, but not wet. The best time to dethatch is usually early spring or early fall if you have a cool-season grass. If you have a warm-season grass, dethatch in late spring or early summer. First, take note of any irrigation lines, sprinklers, or buried utility lines so you can avoid those areas. Then, mow your lawn to about half of its normal height. Follow the instructions with your dethatcher. Remove any loosened thatch, and then fertilize your lawn.
