Before you begin, decide how far apart you need the furrows. You can find the recommended width between plant rows on your seed packet or the information that comes with plants you purchase. Measure out and mark the furrows. Then, use the furrowing attachment on your tiller to slowly work through the soil in straight lines.

Dethatching

You can also use a dethatcher attachment on the FG110. Thatch is dead organic matter on your lawn. Usually, a little thatch is good for your lawn; it helps hold moisture so you don’t have to water as much. However, if thatch builds up too much, it can keep air and water from getting through to the soil. This causes the same problems as compacted soil – your lawn isn’t healthy if it doesn’t get the nutrients it needs.

If you need to dethatch, try to do it when the grass is actively growing and the soil is moist, but not wet. The best time to dethatch is usually early spring or early fall if you have a cool-season grass. If you have a warm-season grass, dethatch in late spring or early summer. First, take note of any irrigation lines, sprinklers, or buried utility lines so you can avoid those areas. Then, mow your lawn to about half of its normal height. Follow the instructions with your dethatcher. Remove any loosened thatch, and then fertilize your lawn.
